Sugarcane - Surry Hills, NSW 24/08/10

After a successful night of lovely food on Friday night Broni and I decided we should again venture out and taste some of what Sydney has to offer. This time it was her pick - Sugarcane. To be honest I hadn't heard of it but Broni found it in the Entertainment Book and suggested it - so off we went. I walked there from work and if I hadn't had the address programmed into my iPhone I probably would never have found it. It has a really understated storefront with frosted glass and minimal signage - which adds to its appeal. An intimate 50 seater, it was a fairly quiet night so the food and drink came quickly.

While we caught up on the gossip of the last few days over our first glass of wine the waiter suggested some Salt and Pepper Squid - and it was so good (as was the wine) that I completely forgot to photograph it. My bad! Broni reminded me when the mains came out.

Crispy skin chicken with blood plum sauce and shallot

Pork Belly
(apologies this isn't clearly listed on their website - I will update when I can!!)

Stir fried green vegetables.

It pains me to admit it but the pork belly was the loser of the night. The duck was sweet and perfectly cooked - and the "Crispy Chin Chicken" (it's hard to say right Broni??) was just like a super fancy Lemon Chicken and soooo tasty. Even the stir fried vegetables (which I was CRAVING) were so mouth-wateringly good!!

Sugarcane is totally a return-to venue and would be great for a small group dinner. Meals are perfect for sharing and there are so many great things to try on the menu. The staff were friendly and as I said - there was no delay in food arriving (or drinks being replenished).
